There are various mailing lists and boards on the Internet that you can join for free. Many people from around the world volunteer their time and experience in order to offer valuable research advice to both new and moderately advanced researchers. Very advanced researchers may also be interested in joining one or more lists to have a place to network in regard to research methodology and resources, help those less far along in their research or to simply make friendly new genealogical acquaintances.
- BAVARIAN-ANCESTORS-L Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the state of Bavaria, Germany. The main focus will include all topics pertaining to genealogical research. A secondary focus will be Bavarian history and other topics in support of an overall understanding of our Bavarian ancestors' way of life.
- DEU-BAYERN-L Topic: All things Bavarian. A discussion forum for anyone with an interest in Bavaria including (but not limited to) such topics as: current events, customs, cuisine, history, politics, ex-patriot issues and experiences, way of life. The languages for the list are English and German.
- BAVARIA-L Topic: the Kingdom, province and state of Bavaria which includes the city of Munich.
- PFALZ-L Topic: the Palatine of Germany (area now divided between Saarland, Rheinland-Pfalz and Hessen, formerly Bavaria's Rhenish Pfalz). The German name for Palatine is Pfalz.
- PALATINES-L Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the German Palatinate and Palatine refugees to Ireland and North America.
- DEU-ALZENAU-KAHLGRUND-L Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical interest in the Kahlgrund area, former Landkreis (county) of Alzenau, Unterfranken, Bavaria, Germany. It now belongs to the Landkreis of Aschaffenburg.
- Ancestry's Bavaria General Query Board Administered by Joanne Parmley, coordinator of this Bavaria GenWeb website. Mainly for those who don't wish to communicate with other researchers via email on a daily basis and who would rather leave messages on a website board.

- DEU-FRANKENLAND-L Topic: A mailing list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the area know as Franken in central Germany (Bavaria). The language for the list is German.

- GEN-DE-L Topic: Gatewayed with the soc.genealogy.german newsgroup for the discussion of German genealogy.

- GERMAN-JEWISH-L Topic: A bilingual English-German mailing list for anyone with a genealogical, cultural or historical interest in people with German-Jewish ancestry.
- GERMAN-LIFE-L Topic: A mailing list for anyone with an interest in discussing aspects of the German way of life.
- GERMAN-MEDIEVAL-L Topic: A mailing list for the discussion and sharing of information regarding genealogy in Germany during the Middle Ages, generally regarded as extending from the fall of Rome in 476 to about 1450.
- GERMAN-MILITARY-L Topic: A bilingual English-German mailing list for anyone with a genealogical or historical interest in the military of Germany.
- GERMAN-NOBILITY-L Topic: A bilingual English-German mailing list for anyone with a genealogical, cultural or historical interest in German nobility.

- AG-Bavaria-L Genealogische Arbeits Gemeinschaft Bavaria. Topic: A German-language mailing list for people with ancestors from the Bavarian districts of Oberpfalz, Oberbayern, Niederbayern and Schwaben.
- Transcribe Old German Documents. A Yahoo mailing list with a group of volunteers who will transcribe records written in the Old German script, including entries in Latin, for free. Once a person clicks on one of the links that read "Join This Group!" and becomes a free member, they will thereafter be able to upload and post a scan of their record to be transcribed.
